Intel to announce Tolapai soon, integrating north, south and memory controller within a chip
Posted on 07/24/2008 @ 12:07 AM
Codenamed Tolapai, the unified chip is designed for embedded systems on the industrial computer market, and is set to compete with rival VIA C7 and AMD Geode architectures. It should be using a 65nm manufacturing technology and it not only combines the North and South bridges into one single chip, it also adds a low power Intel Pentium M CPU in the 1088-Ball FCBGA chip package, measuring only 3.75cm x 3.75cm. Incorporating a Pentium M based core, the new chip could be adopted into any IA-32 operation system without any change to drivers and applications. Intel claims that Tolapai would constitute the best and most powerful way to advance the embedded system and industrial computer market, helping in minimizing the form factor.
As an all-round solution, Tolapai has a built-in DDR2 memory controller, supporting different DDR2 speeds at 400 MHz, 533MHz, 667 MHz and 800MHz. Dual Channel and ECC capabilities are also included in this new processor, and the highest memory capacity supported is 2GB. I/O features coming with Tolapai include: Gigabit Ethernet (RGMII, RMII), IEEE 1588 Time Sync, one MDIO, 133x GPIO, two UARTs, two SMBuses, two CANs (Controller Area Network), one Sync Serial Port (SSP), one 16Bit PCI, five PCI-E, two SATA 2.0 and two USB 2.0 ports.
Intel also prepares an "Acceleration Services" edition for Tolapai, which integrates enhanced hardware security services including AES, 3DES, RC4, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-224-256-384-512, HMAC, ESA and DSA up to 1.6Gbps. The chip may be featuring a TDM interface, make IP Telephony possible on small-factor PCs.
Tolapai has 3 different FSB settings, allowing for 600MHz, 1.06GHz and 1.2GHz settings, while its TDP varies from 13W to 25W. Reference prototypes should be available in Q2 and final models are set to ship in late 2007.

Review ASRock P45R2000-WiFi Intel P45+ICH10R Mainboard
Posted on 07/21/2008 @ 05:37 PM
ASRock P45R2000-WiFi is an interesting board we tested based on the Intel P45+ICH10R chipsets. In our test, we were wondering if we were really testing an ASRock board. This board doesn't look like the familiar ASRock boards we have tested in the past. It has so many features on board that makes it a top notch board in the league of the 1st tier board makers.
Features like
Dual GbE, Realtek ALC890B audio, 1394, WiFi/AP, eSATA. These are some of the features that you would see on the expensive ASUS boards are now available on the P45R2000-WiFi. One thing that is probably lacking from this board is those energy saving features like ASUS's EPU. If not, judging by the feature set and the functionality of this board, it could well be as good or even better than the 1st tier boards out there.

HTC has launched the Touch Diamond smartphone in the Asian market only for a few weeks. However, that’s more than enough for China’s cloning machines to create a Touch Diamond Clone, Diamond J6.
Looks exactly the same as the Touch Diamond, the J6 features a 2.8-inch display, a front and a rear camera, support for MP3 and MP4 playback, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot.
The phone supports GSM 900/1800MHz networks. It costs only 1199 Chinese Yuan, that is about $160 USD.

Intel launches Centrino 2 Processor with HD on the go and introduce mobile Core 2 Extreme at 3.06GHz
Posted on 07/16/2008 @ 09:40 PM
New Intel-Based Laptops Advance All Facets of Notebook PCs
New Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology Brings 'HD-to-Go'; Adds Security and Manageability Features, Boosts Speed, Battery Life and Wireless Range
July 15, 2008 – Intel Corporation unveiled its Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology products for laptops today, powered by five new Intel® Core™2 Duo processors. Close to 250 innovative consumer and business notebook PC designs are on the way, including those equipped with the right combination of powerful processors, graphics and battery life to enjoy viewing stunning high definition videos and myriad other computer and Internet activities.
Intel also introduced the world's highest-performing dual-core mobile processor, the Intel® Core™2 Extreme processor running at a brisk 3.06 GHz, as measured by SPECint*_rate_base2006, an industry benchmark (
www.spec.org)**.
Rounding out a mobile-focused summer for the company, Intel said it also plans to unveil eight processors within 90 days that will include first-ever mobile quad-core products and second-generation products for ultra-thin and light notebooks. In total, Intel will bring 14 diverse new processors into the marketplace as laptop sales continue to outpace desktop PCs.
Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology and Intel® Centrino® 2 with vPro™ Technology improve upon every facet of a laptop's main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless (with WiMAX arriving later this year), and new business-class manageability capabilities.
"When we first introduced Intel Centrino back in 2003, there were very few Wi-Fi hotspots, YouTube videos and social media didn't really exist, ‘thin and light' only referred to weight goals and desktop PCs outsold notebooks by a very wide margin," said Mooly Eden, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the company's Mobile Platforms Group. "Today, notebooks outsell desktops in the U.S, and we're paving the way to HD entertainment, rich online gaming, faster broadband wireless speeds and an easier and more secure way for businesses to manage, update and repair their notebook fleets."
Intel is introducing five dual core processors based on Intel's reinvented transistors (high-k metal gate formula) and advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process. These processors come with a faster 1066MHz front side bus and up to 6MB of L2 cache, and three versions reduce laptop processor wattage about 30 percent, down to just 25 watts. Also featured is Deep Power Down Technology that turns off processing components such as core clocks and cache memory when the laptop is idle for greater energy savings.
Intel also unveiled its Mobile Intel® 45 Express Chipset and wireless Intel® Wi-Fi Link 5000 series that is shipping to customers now, with laptops arriving later in July and August. Delivering five times the speed and twice the range of older 802.11a/g technology, the Intel Wi-Fi Link 5000 series provides 802.11 draft-N support that delivers the fastest data rates possible today -- up to 450 Mbps.
Switchable graphics, a new optional power-saving feature available on Intel Centrino 2-based notebooks, provides both integrated and discrete graphics on a single notebook, enabling users to easily switch between the two options. Switchable graphics delivers greater 3-D performance when needed while providing the option for greater power savings for the best of both worlds.
For consumers, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology delivers the horsepower and battery life to enjoy a typical full-length, Blu-ray* high-definition video on a single battery charge for the first time, plus the ability to play a variety of online games, download music or post videos faster than before.
For businesses, Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology offers enhanced manageability and security options. This is increasingly important as companies replace desktops with notebooks and need to remotely diagnose, update and repair systems over a wireless network. Improved manageability with AMT 4.0 has also been added that provides wireless manageability during system sleep states, ongoing remote configuration capabilities, support for next-generation management standards (WS-MAN and DASH 1.0) and the ability for an employee to initiate communications to IT from outside a company's firewall.
OEMs and Channel system builders will deliver close to 250 systems to market. For more information including Intel product pricing, visit

NVIDIA pairing up NVIDIA nForce 200 SLI processor with INTEL X58 to enable SLI
Posted on 07/15/2008 @ 12:08 PM
Strange enough, we all know that SLI can be hacked in the past. It was enabled on ULi chipsets. It was also running on Intel platforms with the need of a seperate chip.
Is NVIDIA trying to make a quick buck by supply a so call NVIDIA nForce 200 SLI processor which itself does nothing but just some a signature such that the driver detects the existence of a NV signature and therefore enabling SLI?
Why didn't NVIDIA announce their own chipset but pairing it up with Intel X58? Are they as previously mentioned, exiting from making competing Intel desktop chipset or is it because they want to concentrate on the GPU ?
Anyway, it is still good news for Intel as it will be the only platform to support both ATi CrossFire and nVIDIA SLI.

NVIDIA skips LGA 1366 Nehalem plaform, supports SLI by chipset
According to news reports from the web, NVIDIA has acquired the rights to use the Intel QPI technology. The interesting development is that NVIDIA has no interest in developing a new chipset to support the LGA1366 Nehalem chipset. Instead, it will supply it's nForce 200 bridge chip (BR04) to have SLI support on the Intel X58 platforms.
As we already know, SLI technology is nothing other than disabling support using software means. NVIDIA, by enabling SLI support with a so called hardware chip is just going to add more costs to manufacturers who intend to develope Intel X58 boards that supports both CrossFire and SLI.
With NVIDIA reluctance to develope a chipset for the LGA1366 and the mid range LGA1160, it looks like we will only be seeing INTEL for INTEL, AMD for AMD real soon.
It seems that NVIDIA will soon be exiting the chipset business with no more new NV chipsets support both Intel and AMD platforms.

ASUS SmartDoctor lowers 3D benchmark scores
Posted on 07/08/2008 @ 01:03 AM
While benchmarking using the ASUS EAH4850, we noticed something unique about this card. Although the 4850 is a reference design card, the bundle comes with a software for controlling the fan speed of the card.
Something we noticed is that if you run the ASUS SmartDoctor, your 3D benchmark results will plunge by a few fps. This definitely affects benchmark scores. Once the software gets uninstalled and system rebooted, most fo the games will see an increase of 2-3 fps.
