  SiliconImage Sil3112 SATA controller (5)
Bluetooth 14 Mar 2003

Winbench 99

Comparing the same HD using the two different controllers, we can see a consistent results as before. In both Business Disk Winmark99, and High End DiskWinmark99, we see that SiliconImage Sil3112 is better than the Promise controller PDC20375.

Conclusion

Serial ATA HD are definitely here to stay. From the tests, it can be clearly seen that the Sil3112 chipset is probably slightly better than the Promise equivalent. No matter which chipset, SATA is definitely here to stay. As you can see from the results, it is almost the same or slightly better than IDE. No matter what, the SATA uses longer thinner cables for routing within the PC casing and its advantages is that SATA devices are hot pluggable.

Depending on your needs, it is only a matter of time most mainboard manufacturers will have SerialATA controller chipsets on mainboards. If you intend to upgrade by purchasing a PCI slot card, you would be able to determine which is a better one.
