First look - Radeon Express 200P

Radeon Express 200P is the first K8 PCI-E Athlon 64 supporting chipset from ATi. This new chipset comes in two flavours, Express 200P (RX480) is a discrete chipset and Express 200 (RS480) is a video integrated chipset.

The ATi chipset runs in a north south configuration. The North Bridge is RX480 and the South Bridge is SB400.  The South Bridge SB400 supports 4 SATA ports and 2 IDE ports. SATA RAID 0,1 can be created. Gigabit Ethernet is supported through PCI-E as it can deliver bi-directional  500MB/s total bandwidth per device with lower latency compared to other design.

The beauty of this design is that the south bridge can be replaced by PCI-E compliant chipsets from other South Bridge manufacturers. To date, ULi has M1573 which can be paired up with RX480 for increased functionalities e.g. HD audio through the south bridge.

Today, we take a look at the MSI MS-7093 which is a Micro-ATX mainboard based on RX480/SB400 chipset. We will be comparing the performance against a Gigabyte NF4 board that we reviewed earlier.
