Interview with ULi
Electronics (3)
Q6. How do you see the growing trend of 64 bits computing ? Will more resources be channelled into supporting the 64 bits platform ? (drivers, support) A6. It's good to see the growing 64 bits computing especially in x86. ULi already has 64 bits driver for Linux and we co-work with Microsoft to support Windows 64 bits drivers now. I think that the most important things is when 64 bits application will be available in market. Q7. Tell us a bit more about the market share of ULi chipsets used in notebooks and desktop. Which are the manufacturers that are using ULi chipsets on notebooks and desktops? A7. It hard to answer this question because ULi ship lots of southbridge to the market, some southbridge goes to desktop/notebooks, some goes to IPC or other market. We have more customer design-in our new southbridge, M1573, now. You will see more and more ULi chipset in market from now. Our customer base includes ASUS, ASRock, Albatron, SOYO, Toshiba, HP, Fujitsu, Sharp etc. Q8. Does the M1573 which you have been mentioning supports Native Command Queue for SATA ? A8. Yes, it does. M1573 supports 4 SATA ports. Q9. Would we see integrated graphics chipsets in the near future from ULi ? A9. For integrated graphics chipsets solution, our strategy is to co-work with our graphics partner to provide integrated graphics chipsets. Currently, our graphics partner is ATi, you see that ULi provide M1573 southbridge for ATi RS400/RS480 family northbridge chipset now, these solution is the best integrated graphics we got lots design-in so far. Q10. We see that ATi also make north bridges for the K8 and pairing up with ULi's south bridge. Wouldn't there be a conflict of interest since both ATi and ULi also make north bridges supporting the K8 platform ? A10. Depends on market requirements, our customers might use different south bridges. ULi M1573 supports LAN and HD Audio but ATi's SB400 do not. From my understanding, desktop customers prefer ULi M1573 over ATi SB400. Q11. Could you tell us more about the new plans for Transmeta platforms. A11. All our HyperTransport bus chip can support Transmeta and we will have another small package version chip to support thin&light market especial Transmeta platform. Bruce, looks like ULi would make a big impact this year. We wish ULi success.
