Do you still remember the 939SLI-eSATA2,
939SLI32-eSATA2 and K8SLI-eSATA2 boards ? I suppose you do. These excellent
boards provide the capability of eSATA and SLI compatible functions on their
boards for the K8 platform.
With the launch of the AM2 CPUs, it is
not surprised that ASRock releases yet another board based on the ULI 1697
chipset. This board known as the AM2XLI-eSATA2 (see the X instead of S),
is the variant of the popular 939SLI-eSATA2 board. This mainboard supports
the ASRock's XLI technology and
eSATA2 support.
This board comes with 2 PCIex16 slots which can be configured to
work in a single PCIe x16 mode or Dual PCIe x8. This allows XLI operation by
pairing up two similar GeForce 6600, 6800 or 7800 cards and run it in tandem to
improve graphics performance. (XLI technology is basically a technique to speed
up the GPUs with two similar NV cards using the PowerExpress Engine (driver), do
take note that anything beyond 81.98 onwards disabled this feature). You could
also get ready for ATi's Physics solution which should be able to work with 2
PCIe slots (irregardless of desktop chipset) to run say a X1900XT and a X1600XT
(as the physics card). Alternatively, you can hook up 4 monitors and do a
surround view.
On top of all this, the AM2XLI-eSATA2
supports eSATA2 ports. This allows you to hook up eSATA2 enclosures which allows
SATA HDD to be connected externally without compromising the speed in contrast
to the lower performing USB or 1394 interfaces.
The mainboard supports up to a max
capacity of 8GB of DDR2-800 modules. comes with 4 ports of Serial ATA II 3.0Gb/s,
RAID 0, 1, 0+1, JBOD and RAID 5, and "Hot Plug" functions, and 2 ATA 133 IDE
ports, 2 ports of eSATAII 3.0Gb/s (shared with 2 SATAII ports), support "Hot
Plug" function. 5.1 Channel with High Definition Audio, 10/100 Ethernet LAN is
supported. The board is also Windows Vista Hardware Ready ROHS compliant. There
is also a HDMI_SPDIF header and the board supports 7.1 HDA using ALC888 codec.
