Core Microarchitecture 1/4
Background Intel core Microarchitecture is a new generation of microarchitecture that will supercede the current Intel Netburst in the upcoming months. As most of you would already know, the Intel NetBurst architecture is existing in Pentium 4, Pentium D and Xeon processors. Although the Pentium D has a dual core architecture, it somewhat has some limitations in its design. What Intel Core Microarchitecture aims to improve on the areas on its energy/power efficiency, better performance and performance/watt. It is apparent that Intel is going to leave the Netburst architecture behind and move on to the Intel Core Architecture for mobile, desktop and servers. In the upcoming months, we shall see the desktop series appearing by mid year. The desktop series will have 2 platforms, the Bridge Creek platform (for Desktop-home) and Averill Platform (for Desktop-office). They will be used with the Conroe processor. Kentsfield (4 cores) will be for Q1 07 for the desktop home platform. For the mobile client platform, there will be the Napa platform and Santa rosa platform (1H 07) to tap the power of Merom. For the MP Servers, there is the Caneland Platform with Tigerton excepted in 2007. For DP servers/Workstations, it will be Bensley Platform and GildeWell platform targetted at Q2 06 with Woodcrest in Q3 06 and Clovertown in Q1 07. UP servers and Workstations, there will be the Kaylo Platform and Wyloway Platform which will tap the power of Conroe and Kentsfield Q1 07. Intel claims that the performance of the Conroe will be > 40% improvement in performance and >40% reduction in power in TDP as compared to today's Pentium D 950 processor. As for Woodcrest, it will be >80% improvement in performance and 35% reduction in power as compared to Paxville DP. As for Merom, it will improve by over 20% over the existing Intel Core Duo processor (Yonah). Next >>> |
