Introduction

As most of you are aware, the Singapore's broadband is limited to a few major players. Most of them are using either ADSL or CABLE, either own or they buy the bandwidth from them.

Today, M1 launched their new Broadband service. This service is not based on ADSL copper wire or Cable, it is based on wireless technology HSDPA commonly labelled as 3.5G.

In fact, a similar service was already implemented some time ago but it is lmiited to 3G speed which runs at 384Kbps. With HSDPA, the fastest speed M1 is offering to the public is 3.6Mbps. The two other price plans are 384Kbps and 1.8Mbps.

Currently, the 3 unlimited plans are priced as low as $22 to $68. The Broadband 384 (384Kbps/384Kbps) is at S$22. Broadband 1800 (1.8MBps/384Kbps) is S$38 and Broadband 3600 (3.6MBps/384Kbps) is priced at S$68. A 6 mths service commitment applies.

This is indeed a good option for those on the move as you can choose to use a USB modem, PCMCIA or a Linksys wireless router to share out the network whereever you are.

One thing to note is that all plans are bounded by Fair Usage Policy whereby extra charges will be incurred if your monthly traffic exceeds 2GB. The information shown below is extracted from M1 website.

C. Data Services – Fair Use Policy
1.
Usage

1.1 For data services with unlimited usage benefits, your usage should not be:

(a) Excessive (downloading or uploading more than 2 GB each month inclusive of video streaming, video calls, email assess, VOIP calls, downloading and uploading of any content); or

(b) Unreasonable (use which may adversely affect our network, or other customers’ use of our network and/or services); or

(c) Fraudulent (including resupplying our service without our consent to a third party to access the data services).

1.2 If you are in breach of Clause 1.1 above, we have the option to :

(a) charge you a rate of S$0.01 per KB in blocks of 10KB, for continued data services usage; or

(b) suspend or terminate this Agreement in accordance with Clauses 5.2 and 5.3 of this Agreement.

On the next page, we test drive the speed of the HSDPA network at one of the M1 shops and see if it can be good enough for replacing current ADSL/Cable plans.
