Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 : How to convert Microsoft VISTA Dynamic disk back to Basic Disk
Bluetooth 1 Apr 2009

Introduction

Acronis Disk Director Suite 10

Getting ready to recover

If you have been thinking of recovering lost partitions on your XP or Vista system, this software will help you solve all these issues with the click of a few buttons on the GUI.

Last week, I converted my 80GB HDD to a Dynamic Disk. It was a nightmare as I am not able to boot up VISTA anymore. Trying to recover it using the Vista Ultimate installation CD does not help at all.

As all the data are intact together with the system partition. I decided to install another copy of VISTA onto a another HDD. I use MMC console + Disk management, I can see the 4 partitions on my 80GB HDD. Unfortunately, Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 wasn't able to see the Dynamic Disk.

Next, I gotten the Norton Ghost ver 14 trial copy. Norton Ghost is able to detect the presence of dynamic disk and identified it correctly. I then made a back up of the 4 partitions onto the new HDD as a backup.

Deletion of partitions

Using the MMC+Disk Management of Windows Vista, I deleted the 4 partitions. Once the last partition is deleted, the Disk changes back to a Basic Disk (was Dynamic).

Using Acronis Disk Director Suite, we clicked on Recover Partition and that invokes the Acronis Recovery Expert. In the screen capture below, you can see that I have 3 HDD. The 3rd HDD is said to be unallocated. The search begins and it is able to detect the lost partitions and will begin recovering it.

Step 1 : Searching for deleted partitions

Step 2 : All 4 partitions are found with respective capacities shown

Step 3 : The Partitions are reallocated (4 partitions on disk 3 shown above)

Step 4 : Commit the changes so that it will be written onto the disk

Step 5 : Done. Reboot and see the original dynamic disk converted back to Basic Disk with data intact.
