Review Conclusion
of
ASRock A780GMH/128M
AMD 780G+SB710 Mainboard Conclusion
It is not unusual to see a new board based on a older north bridge paired with a newer south bridge. ASRock has done it again with this new board A780GHM/128M. As we have mentioned before, the strength of this board is it's SB710 south bridge. As it is the incarnation of the SB750, it inherits the ACC feature. The hidden gem of this ACC feature is that it can, when paired with certain X3 710 and 720 processors opens up the 4th core of the processor. Features wise, this board has all the necessary functions cramped into a microATX board. It supports all series of AM2/AM2+ processors including the new AM3 Phenom X3/X4. It's integrated graphics is AMD Radeon HD 3200 graphics, DX10 class iGPU, Pixel Shader 4.0, Max. shared memory 512MB. It also has an integrated 128MB side port memory for iGPU. Even if you just get the board and processor, you already have a powerful system for playing back your BluRay 1080p using the DVI-D or HDMI output (there are three VGA Output options: D-Sub, DVI-D and HDMI). If it is not powerful enough for games, pair it up with a selected low end graphics cards and you can enable hybrid CrossFire to enhance performance. If not, just use the PCIe x16 slot with a high end graphics card. There are also 6 x SATAII 3.0 Gb/s connectors, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10 and JBOD), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug functions and PCIE Gigabit LAN 10/100/1000 Mb/s on board for your expansion. Other interesting features include smart BIOS, Qsound, I.E.S and OC Tuner. Performance wise, the board did very well when paired up with an external graphics card the Radeon HD 4870X2. The integrated performance would be similar to older 780G boards. Overclocking features wise, this board has large range of selections where you can choose from. Although we can do a lot with BIOS settings, overclocking it via the ASRock OC Tuner seems to be an easier task than to meddle with BIOS settings other than the HT link, DRAM timings. In our tests, we are able to overclock the X3 710 to 3.13GHz. Anything higher will result in instability.
As this is an mATX board, the package only provided IDE, SATA, CDROM and manual as most of the features are already on the board itself. As for cost/performance, this board is feature rich and at a low price. It has the best cost/performance ratio. In conclusion, I personally would prefer a small board, but with the full fledge 790GX+SB750 chipsets as it supports CrossFireX with 2 PCIe slots. Unless you require that, I think this mATX board really fits the bill during this economic downturn. BIOS used : P1.10, please visit http://my.ocworkbench.com/bbs
