Sony Ericsson today announced PlayNow™ kiosk, the first-of-its-kind, in-store
mobile entertainment content service – launched today in Asia Pacific. PlayNow™
kiosk gives consumers an instant boost of entertainment for their mobile phones,
which includes full-length blockbuster movies, TV series, gaming titles and more
than 23,000 DRM (digital rights management)-free music tracks.
PlayNow™ kiosks will be available in more than 80 Sony Ericsson stores
throughout Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore during the first phase of the
rollout.
At launch the PlayNow kiosks will feature more than 23,000 DRM free music for
download. Blockbuster movies on the same day as DVD launch will also be
available for download at the kiosks. Other titles would that can be downloaded
include TV series and gaming titles.
As the music is DRM free, you can transfer them to your favourite MP3 player for
listening. This is not the case for movies which are DRM locked. The DRM locked
movies will be offered in various formats including WMV or MPEG4, thus some
models would have some films while it shouldn't be too long with films available
in the right format for the Windows Mobile, Symbian models. According to Sony
Ericsson, a 90 min film is around 500MB and takes only less than a few minutes
to finish downloading.
To download the contents, you will have to buy the Smartcard with a store value
of S$20.00. Plug in the device either through USB or SE connector and select the
model of the phone. Follow the instructions, select, pay and download.
Individual music tracks is priced at S$2.99, Music albums at S$19.99,
compilation of 50 pre-selected music track at S$9.99 (all DRM FREE, only S$0.20
per song).
Blockbuster movies available on same day as DVD release is priced at S$24.99, TV
episodes at S$2.99 per episode. Lastly SE mobile phone games at S$5.00
