Only somebody with a good awareness of the slots in the end of the cooler and different VRM layout would be able to spot the difference between an 8800GTS and an HD2900XT!

Nah, the nVidia core is different a lot, perhaps even hidden under the heatspreader:

But I do agree that the design is almost the same and the size and bulkyness of these designs made me sure to wait for future generations that move the technical level ahead instead of just build something that rival the VooDoo5...
