Review DFI LP UT 790FX-M2R AMD 790FX mainboard

DFI has been quiet for sometime as it was a bit late to market it's Intel series of boards. Anyway, for the AM2+, DFI is quick to respond with their top tier Lanparty series, the 790FX-M2R.

The platform entirely supports AMD's Quad-core processor, Phenom (FX) series. 790FX provides the latest version of Hyper Transport 3.0 for accelerating the CPU; LP UT 790FX-M2R features the highest performance chipset 790FX and SB600 as the NB and SB. In addition, DFI brings you an ultra-performance OC platform with the utmost features such like Digital PWM, Bernstein Audio module and advance heat pipe + Transpiper.



DFI 790FX can support a total of 3 CrossFire VGA cards at the same system anytime. LANParty UT 790FX-M2R provides a brand new FSB technology, the Hyper Trsansport3.0, which maximizes the bandwidth up to 41.6GB/s. This is a very significant functionality while CrossFire is at working. It needs a wider and faster bandwidth to accelerate the data transportation.

On board is a 7-phase PWM, which contains 6-phase for processor and a particularly 1-phase for Northbridge. The extra 1-phase PWM is an independent electricity power to support Northbridge. That makes the overclocking ability more flexible in voltage options.

DFI LP UT 790FX-M2R has equipped the powerful weapon ”Transpiper” too; a heat pipe sub- assembly, an extended design from Southbridge, Northbridge and now to PWM. The design of it is unique to any others in market. The, Transpiper serves as an extension joint to carry the heat out from the chassis. The Transpiper can be extended to the outside of the PSU fan.

The board comes with 3 PCI, 3 PCIe x16 and 1 PCIe x 4 slot. The 3 full length slots PCIe Gen 2 can be used to run CrossFire X. It can be configured to run in 2way/4way at x16/x16 or 3 way CrossFire at x16/x8/x8 or 2 way crossfire + Pysics at x16/x8/x8. Right behind the PCI slot is the audio connector for Bernstein audio and two Marvell PCIe GbE controller.
Both north and south bridge are passively cooled by the heatpipe. The South bridge SB600 on the left bottom corner of the board controls the 4 SATAII ports. Another 2 SATAII ports are managed by the Siliconimage 3132 SATAII controller.
On the left are the external USB bracket connectors, the VIA 1394. We can see a debug led and also power on / off buttons + colour coded front panel connectors.
6 USB, 1 1394 and 2 GbE connectors are at the back panel.
