routers and hubs

There are those boxes for home/soho users which have hub & router combined in a single unit like the SMC Barricade DSL/Cable router.

U can go to http://www.outpost.com to check out. The last time i saw, the SMC router was offered at abt US$90 which is much cheaper than the price quoted by the shops here.

I heard that router is somewhat much easier to setup than hub..

i don't recall ever having to configure anything for my hub... just plug it in and away you go

You might want to configure a switch instead.

Hub - a layer 1 device in the ISO layer. It does nothing but repeating the signal. Hub is being use when the inter-distance between 2 station is more then 100m.Do not ask me why coz the explaination will be long and formula for calculation is required. Just take it for a fact.Point to take note is that the bandwidth between all the port in the hub is being shared.

Switch - Commmonly known as a layer 2 device in ISO layer.It function almost the same as the hub except that each individual port has its own delicated bandwidth. Pls noted that an IP address is being assign to the switch whereas not for the hub as the switch has a unique MAC address.Switches are also able to perform other numerous function such as VLAN(Virtual Lan) and traffic filtering.

Router : Router is commonly known as a Layer3 device in the ISO Layer.It basically
performs ip routing, protocol filtering, load balancing,communication between 2 VLAN and many others which is too lengthy to be explain here. Router is normally use in the commercial world for connection to Leased Line or ISDN thru the SERIAL (LL) port or BRI(ISDN) port.

Normally in a enterprise network, the LL is connected to the DSU/CSU which in turn the DSU/CSU is connected to the router using either v.35 cable or v.24 (if i did not rem wrongly). After which, the switch or hub of the internal network will be connected to the ethernet interface of the router using RJ45 cable (UTP CAT 5). The internal network topology can be Star,Mesh,Token Ring etc.
