Couple of years ago, when cable was introduced to "pilot" users here, I could dl 8MB, 10 MB files in seconds. Download speed was touted as 1.5 MB/s. Not anymore.
ADSL appears to be the better choice now - more consistent high speed at a lower cost.
Yoshiki, does speed remain good at all times of day? How about breakdowns? I'm thinking of switching too. Cost for 256KB/s - $38?
Thanks for any info.

Not much breakdowns , the remain good almost at all times..
Get the 512K plan one..

I was a member of the Elmira Beta team, second Cable Modem site in the world, somewhere in Ohio (Akron maybe) was the first.
Anyway, I've had a Cable modem for about 7 years now... and I never thought I'd look back. But lately I'm hearing a lot of talk about charging extra for people who perform more than XX gig of data transfer per month. Seems to me they're selling a high bandwidth connection then punishing people who actually USE it. If the transfer limits are any less than 20gig a month I'll be saying goodbye to cable modems. Already the branch loading is getting so high that real world performance for most people during peak hours is little better than a dialup.
For the first few years it was nice... but it's been going downhill ever since. The modem at my house in Elmira NY (Time Warner) can download at 500 kbytes/sec during dead periods, but a 7pm during the week I'm lucky to see 5kbytes/sec.
I've also got cable modem out here at my apartment in Irvine, CA (Cox Communications), and while it seems to peak out at much lower speeds than Roadrunner, it's not falling off as much under load. Overall I'd like to try DSL at some point, the potential for a clear pipe even at 7pm is tempting (of course there's no guarantee you'll have a clear pipe on the telecom network side... but I figure there's a much better chance of that than there is of the Cable modem companies keeping up with bandwidth demand)
