IDF 2009 Intel Roadmap for Desktop and Netbook
At IDF 2009 held in USA, Intel details some of the upcoming chipsets and processors in the next few quarters. We have put together the slides for desktop and netbooks in the link below for your discussion.
The Intel X58 will continue to reign in the desktop extreme and high end desktop space. Currently, the processors supported are still 45nm Core i7 e.g. Core i7 965 which features QuadCore 8 Threads. This will continue as it transition to the 32nm Gulftown Processor which will feature 6 cores and 12 threads support.
As for the desktop and mainstream segment, the current 5 series chipset e.g. Intel P55 which was launched a couple of weeks ago for Lynnfield processors will continue to support the upcoming 32nm Clarkdale dual core 4 thread processors.
As for the mobile series, the clarksfield will continue with 5 series M chipset. By end of this year, 32nm Arrandale will phase in and will continue to 2010+.
Basically, we have 4 core 8 threads mainstream desktop Lynnfield and Thin and Light notebook processor Clarksfield. In late 2009, it will slowly transition to 32nm processors Clarkdale for desktop and Arrandale. Both are dual core 4 thread with integrated graphics.
The Westmere based 2 chip solution integrates the Graphics core into the processor. Thus the graphics controller is no longer in the chipset but it is integrated into the Processor. Thus, it provides greater performance and lower power via higher integration.
The first 32nm Westmere product will have 2 chip on one core. It wlil have a 32nm Westmere processor core and a 45nm integrated graphics and integrated memory controller. It will also support Turbo Boost Technology, HyperTHreading, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator and Integrated Memory controller with 2 channels of DDR3.
All these will start to evolve with a new Sandy Bridge micro architecture.
