Default Singapore Mediacorp DVB-T2 tuning FAQ

FAQ How to tune into MediaCorp DVB-T2 Digital HD/SD broadcasts
Most younger generation of Singaporeans have not seen a MATV or an external antenna that is houses on the roof top. This is acceptable because most of us lives in a HDB flat which no longer has an external master antenna. In replacement, the TV ports in the HDB flats are connected to the Starhub Cable network.
The Starhub cable network delivers both Analog TV and DVB-C signals. The DVB-C signals are those encrypted free to air channels (MediaCorp + Starhub) that you get when you subscribe to the 3 Basic Group + additional channels. If you have the Starhub set top box and you remove the ID, you will not be able to receive anything. If you are not a subscriber to Starhub, your TV is most likely connected through the RF port direct behind the TV. The Starhub cable which is connected to your home tv ports also deliver the Free to Air MediaCorp 7 channels in Analog format.
The confusion starts here. Some users I saw on another forum bought DVB-T2 capable TV sets but they plugged the antenna to the TV port mounted on the wall. A DVB-T2 decoder is not capable of digital signals from the Starhub cable point since it is in DVB-C signals. Instead, the TV set or set top box should be hooked up to an internal or better, an external antenna to receive the TV signals.
When scanning the TV set for both Analog+digital signals, you should not receive the Starhub colour bar test pattern. If you receive that as an analog channel, that means your RF port is connected to the wall mounted port and you will never be able to receive the digital over the air transmission.
For some TV sets with both capability of decoding DVB-T and DVB-T2, you would probably see two instances of HD5 as it is delivered in both formats. You might be lucky to pick up DVB-T2 broadcasts from Indonesia Batam island if you reside in the southern or western parts of Singapore.
Enjoy tuning your TV set top box or TV set and have fun.

Have you been waiting to receive Digital broadcasts over the air ? Singapore's MDA has announced that Mediacorp free to air channels will go digital by year end of DEC 2013. Unfortunately, they chose to use DVB-T2 standard, abandoning the previous investments in DVB-T. Current digital TV sets with DVB-T Tuner is incompatible with this new standard.
The set top box is now available at some retail stores at shopping malls. The brand is Draco and it costs S$129.

DRACO HDT2-7200 DVB-T2 Receiver Review
OCWorkbench 12 Jan 2014
Singapore’s free to air broadcaster MediaCorp started it’s transmission of the local TV channels digitally a fortnight ago. Although analog broadcasts are still available, you will not be able to tune in after analog signals are switched off in 2016 unless you install a set top box or subscribe to Singtel mio TV or Starhub TV.

In the past, only 4 channels were transmitted in DVB-T format, that is HD 5, 5 (SD) , 8 (SD) and ChannelNewsAsia (SD). Using the DRACO HDT2-7200 DVB-T2 receiver, we are able to receive more channels as the standard delivers more High Definition channels sharing the same frequency. Currently, MediaCorp is transmitting on channels 27, 29 and 31. Channel 27 delivers OKTO, CNA and Channel U all in SD. Channel 29 carries both Channel 5 and Suria in High Definition. Channel 31 carries both Channel 8 and Vasantham both in High Definition. There is another test channel on Channel 33 which is showing a test pattern and a looping scenery clip. Channel 38 is still transmitting 4 channels in DVB-T standard. The older IDTVs receivers will still be able to receive HD5 but Channel 8 will be in SD only.
We bought the set top box from a local retailer at SGD 129.00, unboxed it and set it up for a test.
Below is the unboxing video.
