Would you use a Seagate SSHD ?

Introduction

Solid State Hybrid Drives (SSHD) combines NAND flash based cache memory and mechanical disk platters, to deliver a blend of high capacity & speed at a more affordable price, compared to pure SSDs.




Seagate recently refreshed their SSHD lineup with the ST1000LX001.

This is a performance 2.5 inch 9.5mm hard drive – 1TB 5400rpm hard drive coupled with 32GB of NAND flash.

How it works

Seagate SSHD utilizes Seagate Adaptive Memory technology that tracks data usage and prioritizes frequently used data for faster access in the NAND flash. Quadrupling the built-in NAND flash to 32GB provides a larger cache size for a bigger data sets tasks like multiple games loading and multiple applications launching, thus enhances the computing experience for gamers, prosumers and media creators.

For a laptop, I won't. It's still sensitive to vibrations when the laptop is moved.
For a desktop or laptop that is pretty much stationary, I may if the price is right.

Actually notebook hdd shouldn't have any issues with vibrations. My notebook is over 5 yrs with the hdd still functioning Till today.

As much data as my daughter downloads, I think I need to put one in her laptop.

If you ever tried using a laptop with HDD on a moving vehicle (especially bigger ones like a bus), the hdd will be slow like molasses as it tries to read/write at intervals whenever it can afford to.

Plus, one can handle/carry a powered on laptop with a SSD more roughly.

A laptop was never meant to be used that way

As for hp notebook they have a Mechanic to detect shakes and will auto park the hdd head

Yeah, while the head parking mechanism on the HDD & G sensors implemented within the laptop HDD enclosure can prevent damage to the HDD, it also stops the hdd from responding in a timely matter.

And people use notebooks or tablets on public transport. Solid state storage makes a big difference for using computing devices on the go.

Well I don't think many people will use a notebook in a rocky trip, be it on the bus or train.
