Win 8 file history is a tool for keeping older copies of a particular file. It's not for system backups. For the Windows 8 Backup tool, open the Control Panel -> Windows 7 File Recovery applet and click the "Set up Backup" button.
Regarding SSD's, I think the present generation of SSD's are far more reliable than mechanical hard drives. I like to have an SSD for the operating system and programs but due to cost, HDD's for storage. The SSD's are easy to backup, it's those 2 tb to 4 tb HDD that are difficult and costly to keep backed up.

I will have to say the best standard HD brand I've used is Western Digital. I have yet to have a WD drive fail on me. I have had IBM, Samsung, Maxtor and others fail, but not WD. I am using two WD 150Gs in RAID 0 just for system cache so as not to wear out the primary SSD Raid drive, and have these drives active in my system for 5 years.
Did not see Windows 7 File Recovery applet in Win 8.1 Pro, but there is a tool called Storage Spaces that dups files on a separate HD like a Raid Array.

PCs are slower in technology advancement. Thunderbolt for example comes one yr later than macs...
I have the device but WD just refuse to write a software to make it run under PC.
