GF 8600GT is quite overclockable plus other information
We have been posting lots of news about the 8600 GTS in the past. Today, we shall focus on its little brother, the 8600GT.
Similar to the 8600 GTS, the GPU is manufactured using 80nm processor technology. It also has 32 Stream processors and the 8500GT has 16 Stream processors. The 8600GTS draws a maximum power of 71W, 8600GT at 43W and 8500GT at 40W. The memory width of the 8600GT and 8600GTS is 128bits wide.
The number of transistors on 8600GTS and 8600GT is 289 million while the 8500GT has 210 million transistors. Shader clk of the 8600GTS is 1450MHz, 8600GT is 1180MHz and 8500GT is 900MHz.
The 8600GT is clocked at a default GPUCLK/MEMCLK of 540/700. From what we understand, a number of manufacturers will release cards pre overclocked. In one of our cards, we managed to safely o/c it to 660/770.
That is a 22% o/c of its core. Memory wise, it is not as overclockable.
Please stay tuned to our reviews on 17 April. we have prepared 3 GPU reviews for our readers.

540 to 660Mhz? This is serious overclock!
Sadly the rams did not match this overclockability, but maybe later some better rams will and then the speed increase very significantly, I believe...

I think memory wise, overclocking to 800mhz(& perhaps a bit more) should be easy as even most 7600GTs using similar speed memory modules can do that. Of cos it also depends on the type of memory chips & the card build quality also.
Wonder how well 8600s overclock with a voltge mod.. hmm..

When I completely watercool my GFX card (eg. including the rams and there is cooper directly to the rams, not just the lame stick pads...!) I gained a hell a lot of overclockability. From default 1Ghz my PNY 6800GS went straight to 1.28Ghz and as high as 1.32Ghz is also possible, yet the mosets will overheat in time and it become unreliable...
Still it is pretty good and DDR2 react well to watercooling. Do the same on the 8600 and it can go higher too. Additionaly cool the mosfets as well, as add hi-quality caps and it can shoot straight to higher clocks
If I get my hands on such card, I would made custom watercooling for it
This is my todays waterblock on APG 6800GT PNY card. I moved to PNY 6800GS PCIEx mainly to keep this waterblock
