I guess it is :) The wired devices are always connected but not always on at the same time. The wireless devices that are always connected are the Roku and the iPad. The Revue and the Chromecast are always connected but only recently.
Is this (too many devices connected) causing the problem? What do you suggest I do?

Try disconnecting all devices expect one or two connected and see if the problem persists.

I have seen some aux devices like a Weather Direct server screw up or take down a network. So you could try disabling other devices and use one at a time. It's most likely the cable or DSL modem or even the cable company's setup. Before I switched to DSL, I used to have to call my cable company every two months to have them adjust the speed. It was actually too fast and the modem could not keep up and error out. So try calling you provider and have them test the connection.

bluetooth, I disconnected all devices and there was maybe a slight improvement in connection time. What else do you suggest I try?
Tweakurr, I bought this modem to avoid the rental fee from Comcast. It is a Motorola Surfboard modem SB6141 (purchased from Best Buy). It also about a month beyond the warranty period (90 day warranty). How could I test the modem to see if that might be the problem? FWIW, I bought the router and modem about a month after I hooked up the HTPC in question (which was about 7 months ago). So it could definitely be the modem.

Does anyone have any suggestions about fixing this problem? Is it hardware or software related? Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Tweakurr, I have searched and searched and can't find any help for cable modems and LAN network connection issues, only connection problems due to internet connectivity in general. My cable modem works fine in that regard. I've checked my signal to noise ratios and power levels and they are within recommended values for downstream and upstream. Do you have any specific keywords I can search for?

Did you run Windows 8 on it and it was upgraded from WIn 7?

No, I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit from the beginning. It is an OEM version.

Have you tried deleting the network and all drivers and installing again?
It is important in Win 7 to identify the newly discovered network as a Home network to allow internet access.

Yes I've done that several times and no change. I've even installed a USB network adapter (uninstalling the driver for the onboard ethernet connection) and it still does the same thing.

So when it first boots up you have only local access and no internet correct?
If you right click the network icon in the system tray and select Network and Sharing Center, what does it say about the connection at that time?
