What controller do they use ?
Are you using the 520 series? How long has it been in use?

Sandforce SF-2281. I've been using this 520 for 1 year.

I read a lot of failures of Sandforce controllers.
Samsung has been very good for us, 2 830's and 2 840's and no failures - 2 drives over a year old and two coming up on a year...

There have been a lot of Sandforce failures, primarily the early Sandforce controllers. That's what happens when you pioneer the technology and the fact that most SSD manufacturers used Sandforce at the time. Problems with newer controllers have been more firmware issues than actual controller failure. Each SSD manufacturer using Sandforce controllers use their own firmware and that's where problems happen. Intel's firmware has been solid while others have had a long road to find perfection. At this point in time it seems that Sandforce controller SSD's from any of the manufacturers is a good choice.
That's not to say there is anything wrong with Samsung SSD's, quite the contrary, especially their "Pro" series. The main reason I don't buy them is their "questionable" warranty service in Canada. I know of more than one person that went through a horrible RMA experience with them.

To me SSD is a no no. costly and unreliable.
I need mass storage for pictures and videos which I don't want to experience another SSD blackout.

Maybe the brand & type of SSD you had back luck with?
Early Intel were and some still are Sandforce, Snoopy has had good luck with Sandforce - I have seen some failures first hand.
I have had good dependable results with Samsung SSD.
Who says I don't "need" mass storage for video & pictures?
I have a Samsung 840/ 250G and a 250 & 500 HDD hanging natively in this machine, my "game" rig has a 500 & 1 TB (with a 128GB SSD).
A few 250/320 & 1 TB externals via USB or eSATA for files which don't require high data transfer I often use for system images for others PCs I have built for them.
Time is money, I can load up "AutoDesk Inventor 2012" CAD suite in about the same time on my laptop using AMD 1.5GHz quad core APU (Samsung 840/250G SSD) as my WORKSTATION - an Intel based 3.3GHz Xeon processor (Seagate 500G HDD) , both using 8GB of system RAM, although the workstation has a stand-alone nVidia graphics solution, the APU steals some RAM for video.
The HDDs built today are junk and the reliability is comical, at best. I need the processing speed an SSD affords, the 256MB cache smokes the boot times of even RAID setups using HDDs. My Wife is quite happy with her laptop - AMD quad 1.9GHz APU from button press to login screen? Twelve seconds. My quad 1.5GHz APU laptop running W7 takes slightly longer; around 22-24 unless I O/C the APU to 2.4GHz. Image backups/restores are really of no concern now a days if a failure occurs by chance - and if I need access to files not on the SSD I usually have a 16-32GB mSDC or USB stick handy - or left plugged in.
I paid between $79 and $99 for the Samsung 120(840)/128(830) G SSDs and the 840 series 250G were gotten for $159 last year's "Black Friday" sales, hence the "almost" 1 year up time.
I can't believe your disdain for SSD BT!
You love your tablet & android phone, running the same "unreliable" flash storage most of the digital world is running on... You really need to hybridize your system and embrace that technology - like Snoopy said, things are much better than a few years ago and I will NEVER go back to a HDD for a boot/system drive again.
NEVER EVER .

Ssd in way, too costly .
I haven't try the new ones but I know the speed advantages.

Does Win 8 have a way to do complete backup besides refresh or rest modes?
I want to keep my ssd backed up in case of total melt down.
