ASUS Eee PC 901 vs MSI Wind U100

A few weeks ago, ASUS launched this Eee PC 901 at Computex Taipei 2008. At the same time, MSI also started shipping their MSI Wind that competes directly with the Eee PC 901. Although there are similarities between the two, in terms of the processor used, there are still some differences that users might want to consider when making a purchase of a ultra portable notebook.

Packed in a small footprint with a similar size to the Eee PC 900 we reviewed before, the Eee PC 901 has a similar layout compared to the Eee PC 900. The specifications  are also quite similar except that the CPU is now a Intel N270 Atom that clocks at 1.6GHz. The CPU is of 45nm manufacturing process and is thus cool in running and can last conserve battery life. This unit we have is preloaded with Windows XP, thus it has 4GB+8GB of SSD as storage. The system comes with 1GB of DDR2 memory.  It also comes with 1GB of DDR2 memory and 1.3 mega pixel camera, Wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth. In terms of expansion, it comes with  3 USB ports, 1 LAN port, 1 D-SUB, 1 SD card reader. Battery life with 6 cell 6600mAH give you up to 4.2 - 8 hours**. There is also a software preinstalled -Super Hybrid Engine that throttles performance and power consumption for easy adjustments according to various needs. It weighs 1.1kg

The MSI wind U100 uses the same processor but comes with a LCD at 10". It uses a 80 GB SATA HDD instead of SSD for it's storage. The keyboard is also larger. It also comes with 1GB of DDR2 memory and 1.3 mega pixel camera, Wireless LAN (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth. In terms of expansion, it comes with  3 USB ports, 1 LAN port, 1 D-SUB, 4-in-1 Card Reader, SD/MMC/MS/MSpro.  5-6 hrs battery life using 6 cell battery 5200mAH. The unit weighs 1kg with 3 cell battery.

From the comparison, we can see that the ASUS Eee PC 901 is smaller in screen size, keyboard and storage capacity but it has 802.11/n support and uses a 6 cell 6600mAH battery which can last you up to 8 hours. It SSD on Eee PC 901 also makes it shock proof unlike standard SATA HD on the MSI Wind U100.
