The natural tendency to go for higher speeds and high capacity storage devices is very apparent in the optical drives challenge. Most drives are now equipped with support for more compatible disc types and faster burning speeds for DVDs and CDs.

With this in mind, we needed a drive that is able to burn steadily yet fast enough to be used as a back up device and allow us to make backup copies of our favourite DVD discs up to 4.7GB

Gigabyte GO-W0808A is Gigabyte's offering using a Liteon inside. The Gigabyte GO-W0808A supports 8x DVD+/-R and 4x DVD+/-RW writing while reading for DVD+/-R and DVD +/- RW is all at 8x. Burning of CD-Rs are at 40x, and CD-RW's at 24x. CD/CD-R's can read at 40x, and CD-RW discs at 32x. Although the box labelled DVD dual, just take note that this drive do not support dual layer media.

The Package

The package comes with MyDVD, PowerDVD and a audio cable. It is a pity that it didn't come with the Nero software which I am familiar with. Sonic's MyDVD is quite a easy to use application for authoring your own DVD/VCD but that didn't really help if I just want to burn data files.

The drive is generally shallower in depth. This definitely helps a lot if you were to install it into a SFF since the back of the drive won't be blocking the air flow of the CPU heatsink.
