ASUS P5K3 Deluxe (Intel P35) mainboard review - DDR2 vs DDR3 @ 1333MHz
Bluetooth 26 May 2007

Benchmarks -  DDR2 vs DDR3 @ 1333MHz

So far, we have presented the benchmarks of the P5K3 Deluxe, P5K Deluxe mainboard. Both boards are similar in nature. The only difference is the support of memory type on this two boards.

Based on our observations, both BIOS appears to be similar. The P5K3 Deluxe and P5K Deluxe allows you a range of async memory timings based on your FSB. For example, when your CPU is the 1066FSB (e.g. QX6700, X6800, E6300), the BIOS does not allow you to choose async DDR3-1111 or DDR3-1333. The maximum you can choose is DDR2-1066.

This changes when you increase the FSB to beyond 300MHz. When we set the FSB to 333MHz, we were able to see the option of DDR2-1333 or DDR3-1333 on the respective boards.

To simulate a 1333FSB running on the boards, we set the FSB to 333MHz on the P5K3, running our pair of Corsair and SuperTalent DDR2-1000 modules at DDR2-1066 at CAS 5, 7-7-18, trfc set to 42 clks. It worked and we benchmarked accordingly. We noted the CPU CLK, it was 334.0MHz, CPU-Z didnt' read out the Ram timings correctly. We benchmarked the board accordingly.

We see that there is another option DDR2-1111, the system POSTED but it was unstable. Setting to the option of DDR2-1333, the system POSTED but can't get into WINXP at all even with a CAS Latency of 6 (which is the lowest we can choose from the mainboard).

After we have done all these, we moved back to our P5K3 Deluxe. We paired it up with Kingston DDR3-1333 modules and benchmarked it at SPD timings which is CAS 7-7-7-20 @DDR3-1333. Everything went smoothly. CPU-Z is unable to detect the correct ram timings on this board as well.

We tabulated the results on the next page.
