Review Conclusion of ECS A780GM-A AMD 780G+SB700 mainboard
Bluetooth 13 Apr 2008

Conclusion

This is our 5th AMD 780G board we reviewed on OCWorkbench. I am sure you have seen the benchmark results of the 5 boards. The probable difference is the features, price and layout.

In terms of design, the ECS A780GM-A is a full ATX board and uses a black PCB with a clean look. It comes with the very basic features PCIe x16 slot, 5 SATA II+ 1 eSATA, GbE, 7.1ch audio, HDMI, USB. It lacks DVI-D,1394 and a good bios for overclocking.

The board has some very little options for overclocking. Although it gave a wider range for CPU CLK, GPU CLK, Vdimm and multiplier, CPU voltage options, the BIOS lacks voltage options for NB and SB. The voltage options seems to be quite limited in BIOS. See gallery for more information.

As we are using a X2 5000+ Black edition, we are able to increase the multiplier to 17X giving us 17x200=3.4GHz. Our next quest is to find out what it the max HTT we can do for this chipset. We were only able to go as high as 300MHz x 6. The board also seemed to have some strange boot up  issues when we first set the multiplier down to 6x. WE have to set to beyond 10x and move it down to 6x. I presume that it is a BIOS issue.

In conclusion, ECS has put up a good challenge to the other players with this ECS A780GM-A. ECS could have made use of the ATX form factor and put in another PCIe x16 slot, that will definitely make full use of the capability of the chipset, e.g. run both Hybrid CrossFire and CrossFire X in a Dual 8x mode. For those who intend to build a HTPC, a full fledge board might be a bit big for a small box. On the other hand, the chipset gives you a cheaper alternative over the 790X as this full board has 3 PCI slots and 2 PCIe x1 slot for future expansion use.
