Review : Introduction to Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H Intel G45+ICH10R mainboard
Bluetooth 24 Aug 2008

Introduction

We heard a lot about Intel's integrated chipset since the early days of 945G. Intel G965, G35 and now G45. Even though the G35 supports the DX10, the promised lower CPU utilisation ClearVideo doesn't seem to work when playing back Hi definition video encoded in h.264.

Gigabyte is quick to launch the new generation Intel G45 integrated graphics chipset for the Intel LGA775 processors. The Intel G45 promises better graphics performance and supports decoding of H.264/AVC. The DX10 capable G45 also improve it's specs, including support of adding support for DDR3 up to 1066MHz (previously, there was no DDR3 support), it changed the GMA X4500HD IGP module (the G35 used the X3500 module). It supports PCIe 2.0 and now uses the newer south bridge ICHR10, ICHR10R (before ICHR9, ICHR9R). From what we gathered, the notebook version of the GMA X4500 performs pretty well. We expect the same for it's desktop variant.

The GA-EG45M-DS2H based on the Intel G45 chipset supports the latest Intel 45nm CPUs and integrates support for HDMI, DVI and HDCP, creating a powerful multi-media platform which allows users to do more at once. GA-EG45M-DS2H motherboards paired with Intel 45nm CPUs deliver the very best platform for multitasking, multimedia and high performance gaming.

It supports Dual Channel DDR2 1066 by O.C and there is Dynamic Energy Saver Advanced that provides better energy saving capabilities and enhanced system performance.  With support for VRD 11.1, GIGABYTE’s DES Advanced allows the motherboard to switch to 1 Gear phase switching during idle, allowing for a dramatic increase in power savings.

GIGABYTE has also retooled Dynamic Energy Saver to allow overclockers to experience the benefits of multi-gear power phase switching while overclocking, providing ultra stable, ultra smooth overclocking performance.
* Gear 1 phase switching requires 45nm processors with PSI signal enabled.

In terms of multimedia, it supports the Dolby Home Theater® allowing you to enjoy the splendid audio in the middle of the action, giving their PCs a powerful set of tools to deliver a cinema-style experience in vivid surround sound.

This board also come with Ultra TPM - Industry’s highest level of data Security via onboard TPM. It has a maximum level of data protection with 2048 bit encryption.

Other features on this board include auto adjustment of power based on LAN cable lengths. It also has hardware Overvoltage Control ICs which provide more voltage control options than before for the CPU North Bridge and memory.

For overclockers, there is EasyTune6 for easy o/c within windows. Dual BIOS also automatically recovers BIOS data when main BIOS has crashed or failed. Featuring 2 physical BIOS ROMs integrated onboard, GIGABYTE DualBIOS™ allows quick and seamless recovery from BIOS damage or failure due to viruses or improper BIOS updating.
